The old railroad bridge that crossed the Tygart Valley River was removed in October 1992. And for the last fourteen years, the Elkins rail yard and depot have been isolated from the rail line on the south side of town. Due to the great efforts of the Randolph County Development Authority, the funds have been acquired, the contract has been awarded, and construction of a new bridge at the south end of the old Western Maryland rail yard has been started! Expect to see a bit of activity immediately at the bridge site as the abutments and piers are restored, then most of the work will be done off-site fabricating the steel sections. Since access to the rail yard is essential to the future plans for a museum building located there, the WVRRM will be posting updates as progress is made. In addition, several things are happening at the Elkins Depot. The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad has leased the depot. In addition to being their new dispatching center and retail store, after the completion of the bridge, it will be a railroad depot again as the New Tygart Flyer will be handling passengers there! In addition, the Randolph County Development Authority is building a town square out behind the depot. This will be a central gathering spot for local events. And finally, a new Elkins Depot Welcome Center, the central location for tourist information about the whole area, is now open in the depot. Click on the links to the right for more photos and info.
