Work in the Woods

#8 after the stack and dome covers have been removed.

Several days were spent in the woods clearing the trees and brush from the existing track. One tree was large enough to provide logs that were used as temporary ties.

The moving job was made more difficult by the location. A single-lane road bridge crossed the small creek that separated the locomotives from the paved highway. The bridge could not handle the weight of a locomotive and trailer, so the crew had to bring the locomotives and tenders through the woods and across the bridge to the cranes!

The crew stabilized the existing track by digging into the hard packed earth to slide in place some temporary 4x4 ties. In addition, new track had to be laid down to the bridge and across the bridge.

To keep the weight as low as possible, many parts were removed from the locomotives prior to the move. Air pumps, generators, stacks, dome covers, etc. were taken off and carried by separate truck to WV. A bulldozer and chain were used to drag each locomotive and tender down to and across the bridge for loading.

Hooked up and ready to go!

Logs work well as ties.
